Introduction

Joel Valenzuela, better known as TheDesertLynx, joined Kenton and Denny to explain Dash’s latest privacy upgrade and why its architecture may matter to the wider cross-chain ecosystem. His path into Dash began with a practical question: which network could function as day-to-day money when Bitcoin became slow and expensive to use? He has been working full-time in the Dash community since early 2024.

The headline is Dash’s new Orchard-based shielded pool on Evolution, the project’s data and application platform. The conversation was not an announcement of a live Dash route on THORChain. It was a technical discussion about what a separate Evolution integration could make possible, and what remains difficult when private funds need to cross between different chains and interfaces.

Before the Dash discussion, Kenton shared a useful ecosystem update. THORChain’s Dune data now refreshes hourly rather than once a day after a long back-and-forth between Ray and Dune. The change does not alter the protocol, but it gives the community a more current public data feed to work from.

1. Dash Brings Orchard Privacy to Evolution

Dash has activated shielded transactions on Evolution using the Orchard protocol pioneered by Zcash. Rather than making all Dash activity opaque, the design is optional: people can move credits into a shielded pool, transact privately inside it, then unshield or withdraw when they need to return to a transparent address or Dash Core.

Inside the pool, the public chain records the cryptographic proof and the fact that a shielded action occurred, but not the sender, recipient or amount. Orchard uses zero-knowledge proofs and does not rely on a trusted setup. That gives Dash a newer privacy model than its earlier CoinJoin-based feature, while keeping a transparent path for services and users that need one.

Joel described the result as a major change in capability rather than a minor tuning pass. Dash had spent years refining its existing privacy tools, but Orchard brings a purpose-built shielded pool to the Evolution layer. He said the team went from early DevNet proofs to the current implementation in roughly five months.

The distinction matters. A shielded pool is not a claim that every Dash transaction is private, nor does it eliminate the visibility of funds entering or leaving the pool. It gives users a protected route for the activity that stays inside Evolution.

2. Two Dash Chains Create a Useful, but Real, Boundary

Dash operates with two linked environments. Dash Core is the original Bitcoin-derived proof-of-work payments chain. Evolution is a separate, proof-of-stake platform designed for data, identities and applications. The two share the Dash asset, but they are not interchangeable from an integration perspective.

That boundary explains both the appeal and the trade-off of the upgrade. A shielded Evolution-to-Evolution transfer can keep its sender, recipient and amount private, and Joel said it reaches finality in about one second. But moving value back to Core is a different action. The exit becomes transparent, and the timing behavior changes with it.

For a user, this is a practical distinction. Moving ordinary Dash into the Evolution pool can be quick. A private transfer within the pool can be quick. Returning through the legacy chain can take longer because it follows a different confirmation path. The system is designed to provide choice, not to pretend the two sides have the same properties.

3. What an Evolution-Native THORChain Route Would Require

The THORChain angle is potential, not deployment. Joel’s thought experiment was an Evolution-native Dash pool that could receive shielded Dash directly, rather than treating the existing Core-chain asset as the only possible representation of Dash.

That would be a separate integration. Evolution is loosely Cosmos-based and uses a different codebase from Dash Core, so a protocol such as THORChain would need to support it as its own connected chain. A pool could then preserve more of the fast, private user experience on the Evolution side, but the design, liquidity model and operational details have not been decided.

The podcast did not set a timeline, commit THORChain to an Evolution pool or say that private Dash swaps are live. The useful takeaway is narrower: Dash now has a second technical surface that could be integrated in its own right. Whether that becomes a product depends on engineering work, liquidity and a clear use case.

Any future route would need to be evaluated on the same basics as every other integration: safe custody, reliable signing, sufficient liquidity and a simple experience at THORChain Swap. The privacy upgrade expands the design space. It does not remove those requirements.

4. Finality Is Powerful, but Private Swaps Still Have Friction

Joel used the current Dash-to-Maya flow to make the distinction concrete. He said an ordinary Dash swap can produce an outbound in roughly 40 seconds because Dash’s instant-lock system gives the receiving protocol a strong confirmation signal. For payment use cases, that speed can make a material difference.

Shielded funds create an extra complication. A withdrawal from the private pool back to Dash Core does not look like a standard input-bearing Core transaction, so it cannot use the same instant-lock path in the same way. Joel estimated that a shielded-Dash-to-Bitcoin swap through the existing route could take two to three minutes, or require an unshielding step first.

This is why a second-chain integration came up at all. An Evolution-native pool might avoid some of that round trip for a private-payment flow, but it would add a new chain client, new operational work and a new pool to secure. It is an engineering trade-off, not a shortcut.

The broader lesson fits THORChain’s current focus on faster execution and better quotes. Privacy, finality and cross-chain access are all useful only when the route a person actually takes is understandable and dependable.

5. Privacy Liquidity Needs an Ecosystem, Not Just a Feature

The rest of the conversation focused on the market around private assets. Joel sees a stronger case for a DEX that can serve privacy-focused users without requiring a centralized intermediary. Kenton and Denny agreed that broad support for privacy assets could give THORChain a distinctive audience as other chains, wallets and liquidity sources come together.

That is a thesis from the guest, not a roadmap commitment from THORChain. The protocol’s immediate work remains the integrations and launches already in motion. But the Dash upgrade shows why the conversation is becoming more concrete: private assets are no longer a single technical category. They can have different confirmation models, different privacy boundaries and different integration needs.

For Dash, the next practical job is adoption. Private balances need wallet support, clear user flows and useful places to spend or swap. For THORChain, the opportunity is to keep building reliable native-asset access while being precise about what is available today, what is being tested and what is still only a future possibility.

  • THORChain integration discussions: whether an Evolution-native Dash pool develops from an idea into a scoped proposal. No such route was announced on the episode.
  • Privacy-asset access: how $XMR, $ZEC, Dash and other assets are supported across wallets, liquidity venues and native-asset protocols as integrations mature.
  • Dune data cadence: hourly refreshes give analysts and community builders a more current public view of THORChain activity than the former daily schedule.
